• Department of Finance projects feature in MBA Awards

Building and fitout projects managed by the Department of Finance were recognised in the Master Builders Association Excellence in Construction Awards 2019.

Shenton College Stage 2 won the Best Education Building $20 to $50 million award. The three buildings in the project were constructed by Icon Cockram for the Department of Education. The two-storey learning hub is the largest single education building constructed in the state to date, and includes science and general leaning classrooms, arts and performing arts studios (featuring an auditorium with 400 retractable seats) and staff facilities. The project includes a single storey materials technology building with STEM facilities, and doubling the size of the gymnasium. A large central courtyard and extensive verandas add to the school environment and provide shade.

The existing arts room was refurbished, and landscaping and infrastructure upgraded. The school is next to the 25 hectare Friends of Shenton Bushland, and the unique biodiversity is reflected in the Banksia motif etched into the learning hub façade. The project featured significant public art with three rainbow coloured stainless steel sculptural elements entitled Passage through a Portal by Nedlands-based artist Geoffrey Drake-Brockman.

Mount Hawthorn Primary School won the Best Education Building $1.5 to $5 million award. The two-storey new teaching block was built by McCorkell Constructions WA for the Department of Education.

Kalgoorlie-Boulder Community High School was a finalist in the Best Regional project – Goldfields / Esperance Award. The three-stage school upgrade was built by Pindan Constructions for the Department of Education.

Perth Zoo Lion Enclosure won the Best Public Use Building $1.5 to $5 million award. The two-stage project accommodated two new lions to the zoo and included innovative construction of a special five metre high fence.
