On 7 July 2011, the Premier, the Hon. Colin Barnett MLA announced that the Office of Shared Services (“Shared Services”) would be decommissioned following the Economic Regulation Authority’s (ERA) review into whether it provided a benefit to Western Australia.
The Premier confirmed that the Government had considered the ERA’s report and accepted its recommendations “in principle”, noting that considerable work needs to be done to flesh out the way forward and re-establish corporate services at the agency-level.
The Minister for Finance, the Hon. Simon O’Brien MLC said that Shared Services would continue to operate as “business as usual” until the Government has the opportunity to consider a detailed implementation plan, which is now being developed. As such, Shared Services will continue to service the 58 agencies that have already rolled-in and pay more than 15,000 public servants each fortnight. The Minister also confirmed that in the short-term, “there will be no changes to the current invoicing and payment arrangements for suppliers that do business with government”.
The Minister for Finance is required to submit the implementation plan to Government by November 2011.
