Electricity in WA

Electricity is produced by generators, distributed through powerlines by network operators and sold to consumers by retailers. The Western Australian Government owns four corporations with active roles in the electricity supply chain.

  • Verve Energy – responsible for power generation within the South West Interconnected System (SWIS)
  • Western Power – responsible for building, maintaining and operating the electricity network within the SWIS
  • Synergy – responsible for the sale of electricity within the SWIS
  • Horizon Power – responsible for generation, distribution and sale of electricity in areas outside of the SWIS

Privately-owned electricity generators supply almost half of the electricity in the South West electricity market as well as private mining, mineral processing and other operations.
