    In Western Australia, renewable energy helps the State meet the community’s long term energy needs, while supporting the growing economy. The Western Australian Government continues to support investment in renewable energy to deliver a cleaner energy future for Western Australia.

    Renewable energy projects support future energy security, help lower emissions from the energy sector and enables Western Australia to contribute to the national renewable energy target of 20% renewable generation by 2020.

    In 2011/12, renewable energy accounted for:

    • 9.2% of all electricity consumed on Western Australia’s main electricity grid, the South West Interconnected System.
    • an estimated 6% of all electricity consumed in Western Australia.

    Renewable energy penetration in the state’s main electricity grid will continue to increase as we see the full effects of recently completed large projects and a rise in the number of household solar photovoltaic systems. The Commonwealth Government’s Renewable Energy Target will also drive increased investment in renewable energy generation in the coming decade.

    Use in Western Australia

    Renewable energy will assist Western Australia in meeting growing energy demand while reducing the emission intensity of the electricity sector, and in overcoming the challenge of supplying electricity to remote areas.

    Large-scale wind farms are currently the main source of renewable energy used in Western Australia. Landfill gas and hydro generation facilities in the Kimberley also provide a substantial portion with the contribution from photovoltaic (solar) generation growing rapidly.

    Each type of renewable energy works differently, and has its own specific advantages and challenges. While wind and landfill gas are well developed and more commercially competitive technologies, there are limits on their potential future uptake. Western Australia has excellent solar, plantation waste, geothermal and wave energy resources. However, these technologies are more expensive and are at an earlier stage of development.
