"...the people are welcoming and supportive."

Harriet, People Strategy and Performance
My graduate year in People Strategy and Performance, Corporate Services has enabled me to be involved in a variety of tasks with interesting work and most importantly, the people are welcoming and supportive.
During my first few months, I worked with the Sourcing and Development team and I had the task of coordinating the graduate training calendar. I also attended career fairs, assisted with the graduate interview process and researched possibilities to introduce a departmental indigenous cadetship program.
In my second rotation, I joined Organisational Development and took responsibility for a number of projects including running the monthly new starter inductions, the Department’s wellness program and reviewing the culture tools used by Finance.
The Department of Finance graduate program has given me the opportunity to use what I have learned during my studies while developing my skills to enhance future career prospects.

"...I was suprised that the support and appreciation extended right up to the corporate executive level."

Charlene, People Strategy and Performance
The Graduate Development Program provided me with a range of development opportunities and a thoroughly enjoyable work environment offered by the Department.
In my work area I was immediately set to the test with being involved in Sourcing and Development activities for the Department, including developing recruitment tools e.g. Website development and advertising material, providing training resources for the graduate program and then shortly I was given the responsibility of introducing new starters to the department.
The work changes all the time and I've been involved in a variety of projects that have greatly contributed to my professional development within my career field, training/ human resource. I really enjoyed the flexibility of the program; the rotations allow us to work according with our own strengths before moving into a long term position.
I was supported by a terrific team and buddy throughout the year and was surprised that the support and appreciation extended right up to the corporate executive level.
The Graduate Development Program was attracted me because of its structured training and development scheme, 360 degree support and promise of a great work culture, all of which had been delivered and will continue to be the reasons why I enjoy working at Finance.

"I was involved in preparing the Department’s Budget Statements and Annual Report, for submission to Parliament."

Tessa, Finance and Business Services
What attracted you to the graduate program?
Leaving university was a somewhat daunting prospect, so when applying for graduate positions in my final year of university I wanted to find a placement that would allow for a smooth transition to full-time work. Finance offered me a supportive and enjoyable environment to commence my career in accounting and finance. Their graduate programme includes a comprehensive training and development calendar, a dedicated supervisor and buddy, as well as flexible working arrangements.
What interesting work/projects have you been involved in?
In my graduate year I was involved in preparing the Department’s Budget Statements and Annual Report, for submission to Parliament. This involved drawing together financial and performance information from each business unit within the department and provided me with invaluable knowledge of the diversity of the Department.
I was also given the opportunity to attend and record minutes for the monthly Finance and Procurement Committee meetings. These meetings, which were chaired by the Commissioner of State Revenue and attended by directors or managers from each of the business units, provided me with fascinating insight into the high-level finance and procurement related issues facing the Department.
What do you like about working at Finance?
One of the most enjoyable parts of working at Finance is the people. The team that I joined was incredibly welcoming and fun. Everyone was approachable and more than happy to answer my questions (no matter how small or silly they were). Oh… and the team morning teas were a highlight as well!

"Training support and the buddy system sounded great for a graduate like myself who is always eager and enthusiastic to learn and develop professional skills."

Thomas, ICT
What attracted you to the graduate program?
I saw Finance as a place of opportunities where I could not only broaden my knowledge but also apply the knowledge and skills I acquired from university studies in solving real world problems/tasks. Training support and the buddy system sounded great for a graduate like myself who is always eager and enthusiastic to learn and develop professional skills. The ICT team was looking for an IT graduate preferably with application development background. Nothing else could have been more perfect for me as I have a strong interest in application development area.
What interesting work/projects have you been involved in?
Since I joined, I have been working with the Treasury Business Systems (TBS) team to develop an application called SIMS (Strategic Information Management System). The aim of the SIMS project is to provide a faster and more reliable system to assist day-to-day functions of TBS. On completion, SIMS is meant to replace existing TIMS (Treasury Information Management System) system which is currently being used by WA agencies, mainly for budget forecasting purposes.
As an IT graduate, it has been fun and satisfying as I get the opportunity to use the latest technologies to develop a large application integrated with various up-to-date technologies. Moreover, the SIMS development team is great and is full of IT gurus who have a wide range of IT knowledge and skills.
What do you like about working with us? On-the-job support through training course and buddy system has been brilliant. Training calendar events gave me great opportunities to mingle with not only Finance graduates but also graduates from government agencies across WA. Flexi-time is a great idea to let me balance my work and social life. I get to finish work early to attend my taekwondo classes and basketball games.
